The start of music- early days of plainsong
*The “start” is based on the point from where music “survived”

Plainsongs were “remembered” songs that people knew around Europe. People tweaked the plainsongs and had their own versions. We start seeing names in the 11th and the 12th century like:

1. Cassia of Constantinople
2. Hildegard von Bingen

Hildegard was a poet/composer who was the first to make the plainsong her own (melodic ideas, harmony based on plainsong). She added personal flavor, changed its structure and included a message. For example:

The structural difference is that the tune has a bigger arc than most plainsongs. Also, the voices cover a very wide range because she is trying to expand the emotion in the music and evoke a sort of sensuality as well, despite being music written in this time period.
